Superpower – Reading

Reading is a superpower. Those who can read can achieve anything. However, there are many people whose reading skills are poor, which is unfortunate, but it can be overcome. Therefore, the following article will first explain what the ability to read entails and what skills are necessary for it. It will then be made clear why reading is so important, followed by a discussion of targeted reading support and the role of practice. Finally, the findings are summarized in the section „Those who can read have a clear advantage.“

What is reading?

Reading is the ability to translate written content back into articulated language. Written language is an abstraction of spoken language, which we need for communication. It therefore requires the ability to recognize letters, combine them into words, and then place them in the context of a sentence. The resulting complex structures must not only be translated into spoken language, but also understood. Today, comprehension is often a significant challenge, as even small inaccuracies can lead to significant problems of understanding. In a final step, one must be able to further develop or elaborate on what has been read. Only those who have mastered this final step can truly read.

Why reading is so important

Children usually learn to read and write in elementary school. The reason is obvious: these are basic skills that are crucial for their further educational development. Specifically, reading and writing are cultural skills that are essential in today’s everyday life. Anyone who wants to participate in social life, the workplace, or other aspects of society must master the ability to read. Otherwise, they may be unintentionally influenced, and that may not be desirable.

Targeted Reading Promotion

As part of its reading promotion program, Friedrich Maerker Verlag offers many books that stand out for their ability to build vocabulary and practice it in context. There are also numerous books with questions about the text. The bilingual flip books feature vocabulary references that, on the one hand, contribute to understanding the text, but, on the other hand, also help build vocabulary, which is important for understanding the text and for engaging with content in a differentiated way. The questions, in particular, play a crucial role in training and practicing reading skills.

Practice, practice, practice

Of course, all skills need to be practiced. It’s not without reason that they say practice creates perfection. Therefore, the only thing you can do is repeat: practice, practice, practice! In this context, it should be noted that regular practice is recommended. Reading something every day is desirable. Creating a routine can help. Just try it; you’ll be surprised. There are countless books, there really is something for everyone. And ask questions, talk about the books you’ve read. With a little routine, reading will become much more fun.

Anyone who can read has a clear advantage!

Anyone who reads well and enjoys reading not only has access to great stories, but also access to all kinds of information. This creates a wide range of opportunities for self-determination in their own lives. The world not only becomes accessible, but can also be shaped. In this sense, anyone who can read has a clear advantage. Just do it, read!
