Have you ever wondered how a book is created? Today’s article will answer this question. I’ll discuss my own work and use it as an opportunity to describe how the quadrilingual cookbook „A Little Spoonful of Love“ came about.
General Overview
Well, at the beginning of every project, including a book project, there’s an idea. But then the work begins. Below, I’d like to outline my work process as an author. First, the idea for a project must be developed. A concept must be created that clarifies the type of book, the target audience, the reading age, the author’s intention, the presentation format, and many other questions. The project is then presented to the publishing team. The small independent publishing house has a small team, which offers numerous advantages for the authors. Only after consultation and consultation with the publisher does the actual work on the book begin.
Ideas and Considerations
I’m sure many people before me have had the idea of writing a cookbook; after all, there are countless cookbooks out there. So why should I, of all people, write a cookbook? Well, it was supposed to be a cookbook for readers between 10 and 14 years of age. On the one hand, readers should receive delicious recipes to cook and recreate, and on the other, vocabulary and language skills should be developed, to talk about cooking and food. But it also had to be more than a simple cookbook in various languages; sharing meals together and the household chores should also be addressed. Another question was how to create a playful layout that would encourage independent work and independent thinking.
Results of the Considerations
Recipes, Layout
The result of the considerations and conception is a book in landscape format with a ring binder binding, making it easier to use in the kitchen. The recipe collection is organized by meal, starting with breakfast, to ensure there’s a suitable recipe for every occasion. The recipes also provide the knowledge and skills to prepare healthy meals from different regions using fresh ingredients.
Linguistic Approach to Nutrition
The four languages, namely Spanish, English, German, and Italian, reflect different influences on our eating habits. However, we also know that the book only contains a small selection of recipes, which shows that every person is influenced by different factors, both in terms of food and language. There is also space for individual notes and recipes so that users can adapt the book to their own habits and needs.
At the end of the book, there is also an appendix with thematic vocabulary; the vocabulary in the respective languages covers many topics related to cooking and nutrition. This promotes vocabulary as well as communication skills.
Social Significance of Shared Meals
Eating together has an important social significance; in other words, every holiday is celebrated with a shared meal, like Christmas dinner. Cooking itself is both a learned skill and a creative activity that follows certain rules. Even if every cook follows a recipe, they don’t prepare dishes exactly the same way; there are often small variations that make all the difference.
Further Thought – the Layout Offers Inspiration
Creativity has been taken into account in the book’s layout, for example. This means that the recipes and preparation instructions are presented in color-framed boxes, and there are also templates for invitations and notepads. The book is intended to motivate readers and users to participate, cook themselves, adapt recipes, or try out new ones.
The illustrations are intended to appeal to the target audience and motivate them to engage with food, nutrition, and housekeeping. In this context, the weekly meal plan is worth mentioning; it not only records what to eat on which day. There is included space in the list for activities, around the house and garden, as well as a shopping list with the corresponding expenses.
The quadrilingual cookbook „A Little Spoonful of Love“ by D.S. Felix is available from Friedrich-Maerker-Verlag either directly in the shop or in any bookstore.
