It’s often said: „Foreign lands, foreign customs.“ There’s some truth to this. In Andalusian Spain, various festivals are celebrated in their own unique way. There’s also a distinctive musical tradition, which in turn influences the nature of the celebrations. The bilingual, flip-book „Juan de Sevilla,“ written by D.S. Felix, presents four aspects of Andalusian culture and tradition.
Flamenco, Holy Week, Feria, El Rocío
Flamenco is a musical genre that originated in Andalusia. The music reflects a way of life, playing a crucial role in everyday life and traditional celebrations. Holy Week is one of the cultural highlights of the Andalusian year and also marks the beginning of various spring celebrations. Spring reaches its climax with the Feria de Sevilla, a week of celebration of the Andalusian way of life. A state of emergency prevails. This is followed by El Rocío, a pilgrimage to a wonderful place in the Doñana Nature Reserve near a lagoon that is home to wild horses and flamingos, among other things.
Foreign Language and Culture
This flip-top book tells of everyday Andalusian traditions from Juan’s perspective. You may have already heard of the famous Don Juan, a legend from Seville, a typical Spanish macho. Juan and Macarena, herself a well-known Sevillana, accompany readers through the book. Everyday topics are presented, and the style of presentation allows the reader to immerse themselves in the stories and participate in the cultural experience. The book is published by Friedrich Maerker Verlag and can be purchased online or in bookstores. Orders can, of course, be placed at any small bookstore or directly from the publisher.
Bilingual Flip Books
Juan de Sevilla is a bilingual flip book, in Spanish and German. It was designed by the author D.S. Felix to introduce German readers to Spanish culture. For this reason, in addition to the texts, there are encouragements to actively participate in Spanish culture. Furthermore, each chapter concludes with a questionnaire to encourage readers to reflect on what they have read and the culture, and to relate it to their own culture. These questions help develop an understanding of foreign cultures and languages. Bilingualism enables a deeper, cross-border understanding.
